One Tiny Cottage, Eleven Exterior Transformations Read Through a Designer's Eye
See how a single, neglected little house is reimagined into eleven stunning and distinct design styles. From a cozy craftsman cabin to a sleek modern…

Nine years of design-build renovation work across the Hudson Valley and the Northeast. Nora runs the Renovations, Room Guides and Renovation Mind desks — before-and-after studies, room-by-room design guides, and the long essays on why what we renovate matters.
I came to renovation from the inside of the house. My first job out of an interior-architecture program was on a design-build crew in Beacon, where I spent two years measuring existing conditions — crooked 1920s plaster, sistered joists, kitchens that had been “updated” four times without anyone touching the plan. You learn quickly that the finish is the last ten percent of a renovation. The other ninety is deciding what stays, what moves, and what the original house was trying to tell you before the demo started.
By my fourth year I was leading renovation design: kitchens and baths first, then whole-floor reworks, then the exterior and outdoor projects that most interior designers leave to the contractor. That mix is the point of view I bring to every study on this site. A before-and-after is not a paint story. It is a structure story, a light story, a circulation story — and the photograph only makes sense once you know which walls came down and why.
I write the Renovations desk (interior, exterior and outdoor transformations), the Room Guides (living, dining, bedrooms, kids’ rooms, kitchens, baths, offices) and The Renovation Mind, the long-form essays on plan literacy, place attachment and the quiet discipline of renovating with intent. Every guide names the brand, the tier and the real Northeast cost, because that is the only kind of design writing I would trust from the reader’s side of the desk.
When I am not on site I am usually in a Beacon coffee shop with a stack of plan sets, a red pen and a very patient dog.
A before-and-after is a structure story first. Which walls moved, which stayed, and why — the finish only makes sense after that.
Marvin vs Andersen, KraftMaid vs Semihandmade. Real products, real price tiers, real trade-offs — never vague “top tips.”
Restraint with a single deliberate exception is what makes a room feel designed rather than decorated.
Winterization, maintenance, the way materials age — if the design has no second year it has no first.
Real before-and-after projects broken down for what changed structurally and why — what the original plan should have told the owner before the demo crew arrived.
Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, baths, home offices — design principles paired with brand-level product comparisons across price tiers.
Facade rebuilds, curb-appeal overhauls, gardens, pools and rooftops — outdoor space planned the way an interior renovation is planned.
Long reads on home psychology, plan literacy and the discipline of renovating with intent rather than reaction.
Climate, vintage and structural code all change what a renovation should do. Most references land within this radius:
Joined a Beacon design-build crew straight out of an interior-architecture program. Two years of measuring existing conditions and learning what old houses actually do.
Took over design on kitchens and baths, then whole-floor reworks. First exterior and outdoor projects the following year.
Began writing before-and-after studies for clients — what moved, what stayed, and the three or four decisions that shaped the outcome.
Takes on the Renovations, Room Guides and Renovation Mind desks, bringing the interiors and transformation studies under one roof.
